Do The 45 in Style!

Princess Wow, Pete Pop, the Rock’n’Roll Nurse and Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus make it with the headgear at Do The 45!

On October 11, another fantastic Do The 45 took place at Quinn’s in Beacon, NY. The September event was so successful, what with all the guest DJs, that host Pete Pop decided to invite them all back: Marty Shane, Nina Day and the inimitable Vince Vincent, along with eternal guest DJ Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus. They all played top-notch groovy jams that kept the Quinn’s folk boppin’ all night.

Among the folks at Quinn’s that night was the local celebrity Princess Wow, whose Smile Revolution Show has played in London and New York, as well as venues in the Hudson Valley.

Miss Nancy baked up some sweet vittles that were gone before we could photograph them!!

Bella Bombora and Sheba Shake go-go danced, which induced many of Quinn’s elegant clientele to join them on the raised dance floor.

Toward the end of the night, after all the guest DJs left, DJ Pete Pop and Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus traded ones. Here’s a list of all the records played by The Boog at the October Do The 45:

Subway Soul Club back in action!!

Although it is not as regular as it once was, Subway Soul Club is the longest running sixties soul music dance party in New York City. After several years of dormancy, it raised it’s swingin’ head again last spring and it came back to life on November 5th for an autumnal edition. If things go as planned, we’ll be jumping around at the Subway Soul Club twice a year for the near future.

The fall Subway Soul Club returned to the Francis Kite Room in the East Village of Manhattan—the scene of the spring event. The hostess with the mostest Lady Dawn was in the house, greeting people and making sure that folks on the dance floor were dancing—which wasn’t too hard, since the great records the DJs played kept the dance floor crowded all night. And what DJs!! Joining resident disk spinner Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus was Julio Fernandez and Nogood Nick.

Julio Fernandez swings at Subway Soul Club!

Julio Fernandez (also known as DJ Apollo XII) is a Spaniard who now lives in the States, but he still travels the world as a sought-after song selector. We know him from the fantastic job he does hosting the Keystone State Northern Soul Weekender held every year since 2016. That event is one of the most fabulous soul music events in the country and we urge each reader to attend the next Keystone Soul Weekender—which will be happening October 25 through 27 in Lancaster, PA. Señor Fernandez has fantastic records and really knows how to make them go round; he did a most excellent job at Subway Soul Club and folks couldn’t get enough of his jams.

Nogood Nick picks another boss record to spin at Subway Soul Club!

Nogood Nick has been a guest at Subway Soul Club for many years and we were happy to have him back. He has also hosted events such as Rip! Rig! Panic! and recently had a show on WFMU’s Give the Drummer Some webstream called Electric Lazy Susan. His records are second to none and he plays them like a pro. When Nogood Nick is at the controls you just know the records are going to be bitchen!!

As noted above, the dance floor was full of folks who quite appreciated the music. As it turned out, there was another soul music event that took place the night before. Called Soul Soul Soul, it has been in operation for a couple of years. The great minds behind this operation are our friends Yana Lil’ Jerk the resident DJ and it’s host Steve Myers. There was some concern that one event may detract from the other, however, any worries that may have been generated (mostly by the Boogaloo Bag writer!!!) were all for nothing as both events were very successful. Perhaps in the spring we can actually get it together to co-host a weekender in The City! That would be something, eh?

Meanwhile, back at the Francis Kite Room, the real grief took place early in the evening when the club wasn’t able to produce the promised mixing board. Instead they had some contraption that looked like a console from a Star Trek space ship that included two CD players and all sorts of effects, switches and flashing lights. It was very complicated and it took a full hour for the club’s sound man and the Phastman to figure it out—by fooling with every switch and nob on the thing!!! Luckily, all was figured out before the doors opened, but the thing was long—the two turntables seemed to be in different zip codes!! However, once it was figured out, all went well.

The Subway Soul Club crew: Lady Dawn, Julio, Nogood Nick, Phast

For this Subway Soul Club event, Miss Nancy made some chex mix snack (she calls them doo dads) and vegan brownies for our friends that swing that way.

Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus in a pensive mood at Subway Soul Club!

Since the turntables were ready, and folks were starting to show up before the official start time of 8pm, the resident DJ started the evening off by playing some cool instrumentals, before he got into the hot sauce. Here’s a list of every record played by Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus at the autumn Subway Soul Club event:

¡The Pipeline!

Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus returned to the WFMU Rock’n’Soul Webstreaming hustle with an all new program: The Pipeline! More than a continuation of The Wipe Out, it is an audio experience that takes you on a journey through the center of your mind; full of boss jams, heavy messages, exclusive song edits, breathtaking beats and astonishing segues. The Pipeline is lively, provocative and not for the squeamish. The world premier was heard on the WFMU Rock’n’Soul web-o-net streaming hustle on Saturday October 12 as a DROP IN program at. It is an hour that will fracture your fragile egg-shell mind!

Bonus Shimmy!!

The inner workings of The Salt Box–upstairs in the Rumpus Room!

Our pals Peter Aaron and Sean McDJ have a cool night at the Salt Box in Kingston called Smash! Crash!! Bash!!!. It takes place on the last Friday of the month. At this gig, these guys plays some fabulous rockin’ records that can go from rockabilly to punk to funk, to new wave, to garage rock to who knows what. Whatever they play, it is always rockin’, that’s for sure!

For The Bash!!! on September 27, neither DJ could make the scene, due to more pressing events elsewhere, so they asked Pete Pop and Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus to step in. Instead of trying to imitate The Bash!!!, Pete Pop decided to throw a special bonus Shim Sham Shimmy. Mr. Pop called for a new Shimmy format: R&B, rockabilly, rockin’ blues, rock’n’roll, so that’s what was played at the Salt Box that night. The place was jumpin’!!! Pete and the Boog mixed it up pretty good, trading twenty-minute sets all night.

DJ Pete Pop and Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus goof at the Shim Sham Shimmy!

For this event, Miss Nancy made some banana bread and sliced it up ready to eat.
Our friend Tim Broun has a dog named Rosie. Mr. Broun was coming to the Salt Box that night with his dog in tow, so Miss Nancy made some cookies in the shape of a Scottish terrier in Rosie’s honor!

We were very happy that a bunch of our friends showed up to swing…including Peter Aaron, whose other event got cancelled due to complications of the hurricane Helene. Shame about his event, but we are always happy to see him in the room—playing records or not!

Do The 45: Wild Style!

For the September Do The 45 Rock’n’Soul Dance Party—which was held on Friday the 13th at Quinn’s in Beacon, NY,–host DJ Pete Pop invited our friends Marty Shane, Nina Day and Vince Vincent to come play some of their bossest records—and they did!

Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus and Pete Pop swing at Do The 45!

Marty Shane is a Mod scooter enthusiast who is the proprietor of The Mod Tiki Market, a stall in the Bennington Antique Center in Montgomery, New York. He sells all sorts of cool things, including tiki mugs, Hawaiian shirts and Ben Sherman clothing. For The Do The 45, he played
some totally rockin’ stuff. He’s kind of a mild-mannered person in real life, but as a DJ he knows how to rock.

Marty Shane cues up another boss jam at Do The 45!

Nina Day is also known by her Go-Go dancer name, Sheba Shake. At this Do The 45 she filled both rolls fantastically: she jumped around up on the raised dance floor with Bella Bombora and she spent about 30 minutes behind the turntables playing records. She played Pete Pops’ records, so you know the records were terrific, and she really knows how to pick them.

Miss Nina Day swings at Do The 45!

For many years, Vince Vincent was a Hudson Valley celebrity when he was a DJ at WVKR—Vassar College’s listener supported radio station. He was also the lead singer for Poughkeepsie’s last Rock’n’Roll band—The Greyhounds. Mr. Vincent’s 30 minutes spinning records was quite possibly the most raucous half hour of wild beat music ever heard in the town of Beacon.

Vince Vincent digs the scene at Do The 45!

Speaking of Hudson Valley celebrities, Pete Pop and Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus were pleased that radio personalities Paula Grace and Amanda Lay dropped by to bless the proceedings. They host a fabulous show on WVKR called The Paula and Amanda Show. If you dig crazy people playing boss records, this show is for you. In fact, we were listening to the show on our way to Quinn’s. Just a few minutes after entering the establishment, Paula and Amanda walked in. How do they do it? These people are amazing!!

Miss Nancy—AKA Bella Bombora—baked some great vittles for this event: fudge, banana bread and two kinds of chocolate chip cookies—one that had low sugar content for friends who have issues with that sort of thing.
