Roller Beer A’ Go-Go!!

Industrial Arts Brewing Company is one of these new-fangled custom beer-brewing joints that seem to be taking over the world—or at least New York State. Located in Beacon, it claims to be “the largest, most state-of-the-art brewery in the Hudson Valley.” Perhaps it is. And perhaps its beers are the best in the world—we’ll never know as the Boogaloo Bag writers have given up drinking beer more than 40 years ago. At any rate, it’s a large, swingin’ joint on Fishkill Avenue. It looks as if the building may have been some sort of industrial warehouse of some sort that has been extensively spiffed up. It has a beer drinking room, an outdoor patio, an actual brewery and a nice sized show room with a stage. (Our friend Vibeke Saugestad and her band will be appearing there on October 3rd to celebrate the release of her new record.)

Our pal DJ Pete Pop was asked to produce the audio portion of a roller skating night at the Industrial Arts Brewing Company complex on Saturday July 12. He then asked Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus to assist him in presenting a program of Go-Go music. Go-Go dancer Bella Bombora was also on hand to enhance the entertainment value of the show.

A rent-a-roller skate company (from Rochester, if memory serves) was enlisted to make sure that all comers had the proper footwear for the night and they put down an appropriate floor for the roller folk, and thus, a successful event took place.

Bella Bombora and DJ Pete Pop swing at Industrial Arts Brewing Company!

Pete Pop and the Phast Man played their grooviest records and Bella Bombora shook up a storm. Roller skaters, as well as IABC employees, were falling over themselves telling the DJs how much they enjoyed the music. It turned out to be a pretty cool night.

The Radio Stars Do The 45!

The scene!!

On July 11, a legendary Do The 45 Rock & Soul Dance Party took place at Quinn’s. On that night, host DJ Pete Pop and his side-kick Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus were honored to have been visited by Reet Music radio personalities: Dave Kapulsky, Paula Grace and Amanda Lay.

Dave Kapulsky and Pete Pop swing at Do The 45!

Mr. Kapulsky is the king of Rock’n’Roll relics and rarities. He has worked the radio hustle for a long time—currently he’s got a show on Sirius XM. He is also a world-class record collector. At last count he had something like 130,000 45s in his collection. That’s a lot of wax, Max!!

Paula & Amanda are the hosts of The Paula & Amanda Show on WVKR, the radio station of Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY. When we stumbled up the show in 2020, we thought: “These people are crazy, but they are playing fantastic records!!” On the show one might hear a twist record followed by punk rock, garage rock or a doo wop number. Plus, their back-announcing patter is always a gas. Tune them in on Friday nights.

As if that wasn’t enough, Miss Nancy brought some wonderful treats: her homemade chex mix, brownies and no-bake cookies (chocolate/peanut butter/oatmeal). PLUS: Go-Go dancer Bella Bombora was on hand shaking things up.

Miss Nancy’s yummy treats!!

Shim Sham Shimmy Explodes!!!

DJs Pete Pop and Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus swing at the Shim Sham Shimmy!

On the night after the Fourth of July, the Salt Box exploded with celebratory vinyl fireworks at the Shim Sham Shimmy!! This time, DJ Pete Pop had an earlier hustle to attend to—a wedding in Hyde Park. So his partner in spinning, Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus, started the night solo; thus he played more records than usual (dig the list below). However, things really got going around 1:30 AM when Mr. Pop arrived and the pair took turns spinning three-record sets for the rest of the night.

Pete Pop!!!

In the upstairs Rumpus Room at Kingston’s grooviest drinkery, the wildest rockin’ records were played. Dig: surf, jerk, jump, twist, blues, R&B, rockabilly, etc. Also, The Box now features a food truck that dishes out some yummy grub all night. If you are in the area, you have to make the scene on the first Saturday of the month.
