October held another Wild Weekend: Do The 45 was held on Friday the 10th and the Shim Sham Shimmy took place the next evening—the 11th. The Salt Box had rented out the upstairs Rumpus Room, where the Shimmy usually takes place, to a wedding party of some sort, so Pete Pop and Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus set up their DJ equipment downstairs in what is known as the Brown Room. We call it the Dog Room because hanging on its walls are several velvet paintings of dogs. The Dog Room is a little more cramped, but hey, we’re all friends here.

A few folks from the wedding party ventured into the Dog Room to dig the Shimmy action. Some of them danced around. One fellow requested some contemporary songs that were not pressed on 45 RPM records, the media used at the Shimmy. After being denied the satisfaction of hearing those songs, he asked Pete Pop, “What are you trying to accomplish here?”

The Shim Sham Shimmy accomplishes this: Super boss records from years past played at a sufficient volume for dancing and drinking, allowing folks to lose their inhibitions and loosen up their respective wigs. Open-minded folks will dig it and act accordingly. Others will need to have their edges rounded out before they can comprehend the sublimeness of the situation. Whatever—the Shim Sham Shimmy will be there when these folks are ready to groove.

For this event, Miss Nancy made some baklava and chex mix. Man that baklava was good and it went fast!!!

DJs Pete Pop and Phast Phreddie played their records into the wee hours of the morning, until finally the Salt Box folks pulled the plug and everybody went home. Because Halloween is in October, some seasonal sounds were included in their selections.

On October 10, Do The 45 blew into Quinn’s in Beacon, NY and blew minds with a super blast of super boss records. DJ Pete Pop was on top of his game, swingin’ the joint from about 7:00 PM when he set up. His records were the stars of the evening, that’s for sure. Co-host Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus played a few swingin’ records, too.

The another star of the evening was Go-Go dancer Bella Bombora, who shook up a storm. Her artistic gyrations are not to be missed. Also not to be missed were Miss Nancy’s super yummy brownies with eyeballs—well it is the Halloween month, right? Also, because of the upcoming spooky holiday a few spooky records spiced up the night.

If you’ve been a regular reader of this here Boogaloo Bag blog, then you surely must be aware of the great Do The 45 rock and soul dance party that is hosted by DJ Pete Pop on the second Friday of the month at Quinn’s in Beacon, NY. The event has become the boss place to be, as it has recently attracted several local celebrities. On September 12, Quinn’s was graced with the presence of two radio personalities and an international pop star.

One of the radio personalities was Vinnie Vincent. Although he is no longer on the radio, his show on WVKR is legendary. From time to time he will come to Quinn’s and present a set or two of dynamite records. Also, as leader of the rockin’ Greyhounds, he was a singer on a mission: bring back Rock’n’Roll the way the great Goddess intended it to be!!

The other radio personality was Amanda Lay. She and her partner Paula Grace present a fabulous show every other Friday on WVKR. The Paula and Amanda Show is mandatory listening on the way to Beacon on Do The 45 nights.

Vibeke Saugestad was our international pop star. She’s from Norway, where she played in several cool bands, including The Twisteroos and The Yum-Yums. She now lives in Beacon where she has her own band—the appropriately named Vibeke Saugestad Band. The group recently played at a local venue and we can attest to its fabulousness. Also, the group has a new EP (The Sun Sessions) that has just been released and we can also attest to its fabulousness—its brand of power pop is irresistible. The Boogaloo Bag writers urge each and every Boogaloo Bag reader to order one as soon as possible.

Also on hand for the evening was Go-Go dancer Bella Bombora, who was often joined on the dance floor by Miss Saugestad and/or Mister Vincent. DJ Pete Pop played his usual fantastic records—records that often stopped us and made us go, “WHAT IS THAT!!” Further, we celebrated Pete Pop’s recent birthday with some of Miss Nancy’s yummy cupcakes!

In September, The Shim Sham Shimmy returned to it’s proper schedule on the 6th—the first Saturday of the month at the Salt Box. The menu for the Shim usually calls for a heavy dose of rockin’ blues, R&B, doo wop, rockabilly, Rock’n’Roll, surf instrumentals and mostly pre-British Invasion sounds. However, a few days before the gig, host DJ Pete Pop called his forever-guest DJ Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus to announce he wanted to add some garage records into the mix.

Woooo… geee!! Back to the drawing board! However, instead of just pulling some boss garage rock records out of his collection to spice up the night, The Phast One added white folks doing R&B songs from the sixties—or songs that sounded like that. Paula Grace and Amanda Lay are the two hostesses of The Paula and Amanda Show, a very groovy program that airs on radio station WVKR at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie. The show is on every other Friday night at 7:00. The first time we heard the show we thought, these people are nuts—but they play fantastic records!! Every once in a while, they get a bug to promote their own Rock’n’Roll shows. They did so on August 16. The event was held at a joint in Middletown, NY called Clemson Brewery. The place had a nice sized show room with a big stage. Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus was honored to act as the DJ for the night. He played records before, in between and a little bit after the bands played.

The bands that played were Downward Donkey, The Time Surfers and The VaVa Voodoos. Downward Donkey is a power trio—loud and rockin’! The Time Surfers are an excellent surf music-influenced instrumental band that features the artistic gyrations of Go-Go dancer Bella Bombora. At one point, Miss Bombora was joined on stage by local Go-Go dancer Sheba Shake. The Va Va Voodoos are an interesting alternative-punk band heavily influenced by The Cramps and The Velvet Underground. We may need to see this group again.

Paula and Amanda were the MCs of the show and they introduced each band with their unique style.

The second weekend of August was a wild one. Do The 45 was on the 8th. The Shim Sham Shimmy was on the 9th. Two nights of boss records in a row—all because Pete Pop had another hustle on the usual first Saturday of the month. But that’s cool. We like these wild weekends. Another is coming up in October! The Shim Sham Shimmy was especially wild because early in the evening a bachelorette party showed up at the Salt Box—the bride and a bunch of her friends got drunk and danced around to the reet sounds that were put down by DJs Pete Pop and Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus.

Rumpus Room is where all the Salt Box action takes place. Later that night, it was visited by Labretta Suede & the Motel 6. This band is a musical ensemble that rocks to the extreme. It originated in New Zealand about 20 years ago and seems to spend quite a bit of time in New York City. Before the Boogaloo Bag was fully operational, Phast Phreddie DJ’d one of the group’s shows and can attest to the high energy excitement that the band produces. Think of a female Iggy Pop and you get the idea. On the night of The Shimmy, Labretta and her band had a gig earlier a few blocks away at Snapper Magee’s and dropped by the Salt Box afterward, where they jumped and jived into the wee hours. Super fun night, that’s for sure!!

Do The 45—Pete Pop’s fantastic Rock & Soul DJ night held on the second Friday of the month at Quinn’s in Beacon—keeps attracting celebrities. On August 8 the event was honored with the presence of Suzy Hotrod. Mostly we know her as one of the fabulous DJs with a rockin’ show on WFMU. However, she is also a musician, professional photographer and a world-class roller derby athelete. She and her friend happened to be walking around Beacon on the right night and saw Pete Pop’s sandwich sign advertising reet music on the street. She and her date rushed in and were immediately gassed by the sounds that Mr. Pop and his side-kick Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus were spinnin’.

Also that night, Go-Go dancer Bella Bombora was joined on the raised dance floor by several folks who came to jump with the jivers. Pete Pop played his usual fantastic records and The Phast Man tried to keep up with a couple of boss jams.
