Doin’ the Shimmy with our friends!

Look for Lenny Kaye’s new album, Goin’ Local, coming out soon!!

Saturday May 2 was one of those days when there was just too many things going on. For one thing, DJ Pete Pop double booked himself: The regularly scheduled Shim Sham Shimmy at the Salt Box and an early evening gig at the Rhine Cellar in Rhinebeck.

That wasn’t all—also happening on that night our friend and hero Lenny Kaye was opening for our other friend and hero Dave Alvin at the Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock. No way are we going to miss that!!

Instead of moving the Shimmy—which was probably the smart thing to do—we worked around it. Pete’s hustle at the Rhine Cellar ended around midnight so he showed up a little late. Miss Nancy and Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus got to the Salt Box early, set up, then the Phast One drove 20 minutes to Woodstock to hang with Lenny. Dave wasn’t at the club yet. Phast and Lenny were able to hang out after his sound check; chow down, talk about old times and discuss Lenny’s soon-to-be-released solo album, Goin’ Local. Phast also hung out a bit with Dave’s co-star Jimmie Dale Gilmore, which was a gas. Mr. Gilmore is one of our favorite singer/songwriters; plus he had a cool bit in one the greatest comedy movies of all time, The Big Lebowski.

We caught some of Lenny’s set before heading down to Kingston. He writes some very cool songs and he’s going to be touring this summer, so make sure you catch him when he comes to your town. On the way out, we ran into Dave Alvin who was just pulling up, so we were able to chat with him briefly. Then—zoom!—it was down the hill to the Salt Box.

We got to the Box right at nine o’clock, Shimmy start time. The upstairs Rumpus Room was already full of folks awaiting the Shim Sham Shimmy action. The switch was flipped and records were played. Before you know it, the Shimmy was in full swing with folks boppin’ around.

Mr. Pop showed up just before one o’clock and played some fantastic records. However, because the Boog played solo most of the night, he ended up spinning nearly 120 records! Here they are…

¡New Toy Boogaloo!

On April 18, the second Shingaling Boogaloo was held at the Salt Box in the Stockade District of Kingston, NY. DJ Pete Pop and Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus brought some of their favorite records that feature bongs and Latin-type rhythms. Also, Pete Pop brought his new toys: a pair of Reloop RP-7 turntables—professional record players designed for DJs who spin 7”, mostly 45RPM records exclusively, much like Mr. Pop and The Boog.

The turntables worked beautifully; so much that The Boog is interested in acquiring a pair. These machines would make working the Rumpus Room at the Salt Box much easier as they are a lot lighter than the usual Technics 1200s that they have to drag upstairs at each event.

Meanwhile, attendees didn’t seem to care what turntables were used, as long as the music was hot and loud—which it was—in order for them to jump around and have a good time.

Pete Pop played some great records—including a bunch of great cumbia records. Below is a list of the records played by Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus, who included a few exotic thangs:
