Beach Party Boogaloo!

Caracas is the name of a city in Venezuela. It is also the name of a Venezuelan restaurant and bar located on the beach in the Rockaways, Queens. It is here that our pal DJ Ratta—un auténtico venezolano—holds forth every Sunday in the summer time. He calls his event Shake It Up Sundays at the Beach—and that’s exactly what happens from 2pm to 9pm. June 29 was his birthday, and Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus was honored to be among the DJs he invited to help celebrate it. The other guest DJ was Debbie D from Georgia, who is the caretaker and den mother of the fabulous WFMU Rock ‘n’ Soul Ichiban interweb music stream.

Ratta is one of our favorite DJs on the scene. He likes to mix mambo records in with ska and old R&B jams. How can you not like that? Debbie D also digs the old noise, and her selections were all perfect for the event.

It was a lovely day at the beach: the sky was blue, there was a cool breeze and the food at Caracas is amazing! The arepas, a Venezuelan delicacy, are deee-lishus! Plus, the coconut smoothie is highly recommended for those who do not partake in margaritas. Not only was June 29 Ratta’s birthday, but also it was the day of World Cup soccer games. At 4pm, the Shake It Up festivities were put on hold as a giant TV screen was dragged out and hooked up to the speaker system and the game, featuring Costa Rica and Greece, was watched. At the end of regular time, the game was tied at one goal apiece. It went into overtime and still no winner emerged. That left it up to a unique—some say bizarre—ritual known as “penalty kicks.” When the smoke had cleared, Costa Rica was the winner, and the country’s team advanced into another stage of competition. However, the game took nearly the whole early evening, leaving only a couple hours of Shake It Up time left, with mostly Debbie D and The Boog working the turntables. The night got crazy, with folks dancing and carrying on; and it included Debbie D ending one of her sets with Link Wray’s “Run Chicken Run,” only for The Boog to answer with his own chicken song, followed by a set of food songs!

Just before the clock struck 9, Ratta took to the turntables, where he was wished happy birthday and he played a series of boss rocksteady records.

June DYNAGROOVE!

DYNAGROOVE_june
As the astute Boogaloo Bag reader may note, two weeks ago, Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus DJ’d at Union Pool. His co-DJ that night was Avi Spivak. Not only is Mr. Spivak a swingin’ DJ, but he is a very hip artist specializing in mind-blowing, cartoon-like images. He has  his own art gallery shows in Brooklyn, makes covers for magazines, illustrates album covers,  draws flyers for big rock shows, and edits his own rock/cartoon fanzine called Human Being Lawnmower. Perhaps his finest shining moment is the drawings he did for Kicksville Confidential, the story of Norton Records as told through cartoons. In fact, Mr. Spivak is so busy with his artwork that there is most likely several things he’s done that have gone unnoticed by the Boogaloo Bag writers.

This just in: Mr. Spivak, along with our pals Josh Styles and Sophie Thunder, is currently working to open Rebel Rouser*, a spectacular new retail environment that will sell records, comic books and various select specialty items.

It was no cartoon show at the DYNAGROOVE on Friday the 13th, when Avi Spivak was guest DJ for host The Boogaloo Omnibus. Teddy’s Bar & Grill swung mightily during Mr. Spivak’s groovy sixty-minute set, during which The Boog enjoyed a catfish dinner, cooked to perfection by the mighty, mighty Teddy’s kitchen staff. Now that it’s summer, Teddy’s also features some of the best lemonade a person can drink. Some of the finest (and most reasonably priced!) dining in Williamsburg can be found at Teddy’s.

Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus also played a few good 45s, as witnessed by his set list below:

Norton Triple Header Boogaloo Action!

Daddy Long Legs swings at the Norton Records Triple Record Release Show!

Daddy Long Legs swings at the Norton Records Triple Record Release Show!

If someone were to put a squirt gun to the respective heads of the Boogaloo Bag writers and say, “Name your favorite record company!” it is with no doubt whatsoever that they would name Norton Records. Here is a record label that is able to issue one pretty darn fabulous record after another, year after year for, gee, how many years now? Certainly more than twenty, so perhaps about thirty years. Every Norton release deserves consideration for action on one’s turntable (or CD player, if one swings digitally). There is not a single major record company that can make the same boast! The only current record company that comes close would be the crew at Daptone. After that, what’s to love?

On Saturday May 31, Norton Records Triple Record Release Show took place in order to celebrate the release of a trio of new long players—one each by long-time Norton recording artists The A-Bones; relative new-comers Daddy Long Legs; and a new discovery, Miriam. The event was held at Union Pool in Williamsburg at which all three acts played, and it was DJ’d by Norton employee Avi Spivak (Human Being Lawnmower) and Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus (who has his own Norton connection: dig “Sing This All Together” by The Love Supremes).

Norton Records secret weapon Miriam enchants the crowd with cool, cool cooing!

Norton Records secret weapon Miriam enchants the crowd with cool, cool cooing!

The event was a golden gasser, with a most excellent opening set by Miriam. Miriam, of course, is Miriam Linna, co-owner of Norton Records and president and chief publisher of Kicks Books. For many years, she sat in the back of the stage beating the drums and singing an occasional song with The A-Bones. On this night, she stood right in front on the stage, sang six groovy songs, and was backed by her own band. Her album, called Nobody’s Baby, is a salute to the female singers of the sixties—especially Jackie DeShannon—and it is an instant classic and is highly recommended.

The A-Bones perform “Gaylord Is a Coward” with the great Gaylord Fields at the Norton Triple Record Release Show!

The A-Bones is as much a part of Norton Records as Norton Records is a part of The A-Bones. With Ms. Linna in back on drums, out front is lead singer Billy Miller—the other half of the Norton Records mean and clean music machine! In concert, The A-Bones can be rockin’ and raw, and this night saw exactly that! Pure, unadulterated garage rock mayhem! The addition of tenor (terror!) saxophonist Stan Zenkoff (previously with The Jigglers) returns them to the super-boss sound of the great Pacific Northwest bands (Sonics, Wailers, Paul Revere & the Raiders) that the band digs so much—a sound that was incomplete when the previous saxophonist left the band a few years ago. Further excitement was created by the primitive howlings of the great Gaylord Fields on several songs toward the end of the set: “Ooo Pah Pah Doo,” “Gaylord Is a Coward” and his hit record “Squat With Me Baby.” The new A-Bones platter, Ears Wide Shut, was recorded on one night in February earlier this year (augmented with Ira Kaplan of Yo La Tengo) and somehow re-creates the fun and thrill of a live A-Bones show! It is an instant classic and is highly recommended!

Daddy Long Legs whips the crowd into a frenzy at the Norton Records Triple Record Release Show!

Daddy Long Legs whips the crowd into a frenzy at the Norton Records Triple Record Release Show!

Daddy Long Legs is only three men—but what a joyful, righteous, raucous noise these three men can unleash! Lead singer Brian Hurd (AKA Daddy Long Legs) is a very tall fellow with even taller hair who plays the wildest, most terrific blues-wailin’ harmonica conceivable for a young white man in this day and age—imagine if Paul Butterfield was in the MC5! Guitarist Murat Aktürk plays the bossest, most distorted slide guitar this side of Exile on Highway 49—and dig: he’s from Turkey! If Ahmet Ertegun were alive, he would die!! Josh Styles doesn’t play his drums, he attacks them with great big long weapons. A Daddy Long Legs show is not over until the drum set is beaten to a pulp! The new Daddy Long Legs album is called Blood From a Stone and it will blow your mind how fabulous it is. It is an instant classic and is more than highly recommended—it is crucial and mandatory for anybody who reads the Boogaloo Bag!

DJs Avi Spivak and Phast Phreddie alternated playing records between bands. Mr. Spivak wowed the crowd by playing a couple boss Italian freak beat pounders. When the live music portion of the Norton Triple Record Release Show was over, an instant DJ booth was set up on the very stage these three fine bands had just rampaged upon and a fantastic frenzy was unfuraled as the two DJs played alternating records for the crowded dance floor that jumped and jived until the wee hours!

Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus and Sir Charles Gaskins swing at the CHEETAH BEAT!

The CHEETAH BEAT is another in a growing line of WANG DANG DOODLE presentations—this one featured the top DJ skills of Sir Charles Gaskins. He’s been in several bands, runs Killer Diller Records, works on the cool Bananas magazine and on the last Friday of the month he DJs Finger Lickin’ Fridays at the Grand Victory—which usually keeps him from swingin’ at The Commodore on the fourth Friday of every other month, when Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus holds down the DJ booth with various friends.

However, with a rare fifth Friday in May, Mr. Gaskins was free to swing on May 23, when clientele of The Commodore were treated to the super boss sounds of The CHEETAH BEAT! Mr. Gaskins played the perfect combination of raunchy R&B, sizzling soul and grungy garage records that go over so well at The Commodore. Indeed, the place was jumping all night, with dancers, prancers and romancers filling the dance floor, spilling drinks and eating the super fine fried chicken that The Commodore is so famous for.

Speaking of dancers, also on the scene was The Boogaloo Bag’s favorite Go-Go dancer, Nancy Gardner. In fact, it was her birthday and she chose to spend it doing the watusi at The CHEETAH BEAT! Subway Soul Club Springs into Action!!

DJs Ambassador Hazy and Bossy Boots consult with each other when spinning 45s at Subway Soul Club.

DJs Ambassador Hazy and Bossy Boots consult with each other when spinning 45s at Subway Soul Club.

Wow! Did it really happen? Yes it did! SUBWAY SOUL CLUB returned to the Metro-Brooklyn area with a fabulous event on Saturday May 17. Fearless leader Lady Dawn was successful in rounding up the dancing troops, who piled into the lovely Greenpoint bar known as Coco 66 and swung the night away. Resident DJ Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus was able to convince the groovy Bossy Boots to fly back to Brooklyn from her home in New Orleans just to DJ for this night only. Also, DJ Ambassador Hazy—who nearly two years ago fathered a son—was able set aside his parental duties and come out of retirement.

Ambassador Hazy selects another great record to play at Subway Soul Club.

Ambassador Hazy selects another great record to play at Subway Soul Club.

And what records were played!! Bossy Boots poured it on with swingin’ New Orleans second line beats and boss blues-inflected soul tracks. Mr. Hazy packed the floor by playing hard-hitting R&B records. Meanwhile, The Boog kept folks dancing by playing some old favorites as well as some recent acquisitions. The sound of sweet soul music filled the air, along with the sound of leather hitting the hardwood floor!

Bossy Boots prepares to spin the next record at Subway Soul Club.

All night long, every attendee danced and drank with great big smiles on their faces, knowing that there is nothing in the world like the SUBWAY SOUL CLUB!! That Lady Dawn really knows how to make a happening happen! With any luck, there will be another SUBWAY SOUL CLUB dance party in the early fall. Stay tuned, Batman!

The merry month of May brought the DYNAGROOVE back to Teddy’s Bar & Grill with a whollop!! The place was jumpin’ with folks dining and grooving all night long. Guest DJ for the night was Nogood Nick, who brought some truly groovy records: Olatunji, organ grooves, Latin soul, Brazilian beat, Roland Kirk, etc. Most of these fine recordings were being played while Host DJ Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus was chewing on the most excellent calamari this side of the Newtown Creek! Also, he was very happy to see some of his friends who dropped by to dig the scene.

Boogaloo Psyche & Garage Fest!

Rachael and Gabriel Guma make with the psychedelic lights at the Brooklyn Psych & Garage Fest.

Rachael and Gabriel Guma make with the psychedelic lights at the Brooklyn Psych & Garage Fest.

The Brooklyn Psych and Garage Fest was a totally heavy happening that happened on Friday, May 2 at the Gutter in Williamsburg, Brooklyn featuring some of our favorite local rock bands: Heavybirds, Organs and Twin Guns.

The evening commenced with the Heavybirds, who unleashed a loud, unholy drone of guitar buzz that set the scene. The trio consists of two guitarists and a cat who banged on a bass drum: truly boss!

Heavybirds

Heavybirds

With their tight songs and solid rock beat, the Organs were the most conventional group of the evening. The writers of The Boogaloo Bag have seen this act before and they dig it the most!

Organs

Organs

Twin Guns, who set up the night and closed the show, were once a guitar-drum duo, but recently added a bass player to the ranks, giving the group a more full sound. At a Twin Guns show you will be overpowered by tough, surf-influenced, spaghetti western soundtrack guitar playing. Twin Guns emits vibes ala the legendary Suicide group and is also reminiscent of The Cramps at their most psycho (and less “billy”) moments. With all members dressed in black and wearing sunglasses, Twin Guns make a memorable sight—especially when you add in the full presentation of lights and smoke machines! Plus, any rock band that opens its set with a mutant version of “Harlem Nocturne” and closes it with a fine interpretation of “1970 (I Feel All Right)” is OK by The Boogaloo Bag!

Twin Guns

Twin Guns

Speaking of lights—one of the top features of the Brooklyn Psych and Garage Fest was the most excellent and artistic back-wall lighting of Rachael and Gabriel Guma, who incorporated dyed oils on an overhead projector and a slide show ala the old Fillmore Auditorium light shows. It was a gas!

Boogaloo Number 9 Takes Off for the Planet Venus!

Kicks Books is part of the Norton Media Empire that includes Norton Records, Kicks Magazine and the boss raunch and roll combo The A-Bones, and is run by our friend Miriam Linna—a fine example of a human being that The Boogalboo Bag writers have been acquainted with since 1975. The books division has published fabulous and important works by such writers as Harlan Ellison, Royston Ellis, Nick Tosches and Charles Plymell. Also, Kicks Books has given printed vent to bonafide musical types: Andre Williams, Kim Fowley and Sun Ra.

It was for this latter personage that a gathering of hep cats and kittens, curious onlookers and finger poppin’ daddies were gathered on the Friday evening of April 25. Kicks Books has just issued Prophetika, the lost writings of Sun Ra, and a launch event was in order and it duly took place in the meeting room of St. Mark’s Church in the Bowery under the kind auspices of The Poetry Project.

Sun Ra, who is known widely as a far-out jazz musician and bandleader, was also a poet, philosopher and interplanetary traveler of some note. Prophetika is being published in the centennial year of Mr. Ra’s birth. For the event, Ms. Linna rounded up some of Sun Ra’s most fervent fans in order to read his work aloud to the faithful, perform music inspired by his, and to celebrate the spirit of a singular individual whose like will never appear on this world again. Readers were Kicks Books author Charles Plymell, musician/writer Mike Edison, guitarist Mick Collins (Gories, Dirtbombs), Boston rock ‘n’ rhythm shouter Barrence Whitfield and Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus, who also served as the master of ceremonies. Through much of the night, The Rocket Train Delta Science Micro Arkestra (Mr. Edison, who played Solar Space Theremin and percussion, and the esteemed bongo player Bob Bert) added aural punctuation in all the appropriate places.

A confirmed Sun Ra follower since having been initiated as such in high school, Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus read from an interview he conducted with Sun Ra back in the late eighties and then recited Sun Ra’s poem “The Universe Is Out There Waiting,” and blew his C-melody saxophone while the lovely Nancy “Jeannie” Gardner shook her maracas and interpreted the words with artful choreography. Dig that action HERE!!!!

Although Sun Ra has been physically absent from Earth for about 20 years, his presence was most definitely felt in the room.

When the festivities were over, many of the Sun Ra devotees made the scene at a super-boss after-party at Home Sweet Home, where our pal Jonathan Toubin was in full swing with his Shakin’ All Over Under Sideways Down night of rockin’ R&B records. Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus played a few records, as did Norton Records head honcho Billy Miller—many picked by Miriam Linna—as Barrence Whitfield was seen ripping it up on the dance floor!

Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus and Mr. Gaylord Fields are all thumbs at the DYNAGROOVE!

The second Friday of the month has become very popular at Teddy’s Bar & Grill, with diners coming from around the city—Long island and New Jersey, even—to chow on the great food and dig the great audio atmosphere as presented by the DYNAGROOVE. Friday April 11 was no exception, as host DJ Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus was joined by the great WFMU DJ Gaylord Fields in a program of cool jazz, charming cha-chas, provocative pop and enticing exotic rhythms.

Mr. Fields is always a perfect guest DJ for the DYNAGROOVE. If you ever listen to his show on early Sunday evenings, you would know that his eclectic enthusiasm for magnificent melodies naturally corresponds with the dynamic of the DYNAGROOVE: groovy music! Mr. Fields is a guest at the DYNAGROOVE several times a year, so make sure you catch his scene the next time he swings.

Josh Styles goofs with the Bubble & Squeak crew: Sophie Thunder, Pixie 007, Jeremy Bastard and Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus.

Our friends Pixie 007 and Sophie Thunder recently began a groovy new DJ night called Bubble & Squeak in the bar of the Hotel Chantelle in the Lower East Side. According to official promo, “Hotel Chantelle provides a relaxed and sophisticated atmosphere…” On Sunday April 6, the sophistication bar was lowered considerably when Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus initiated Bubble & Squeak by being its first guest DJ! Resident DJ for this event (perhaps for the Hotel Chantelle, too) is Jeremy Bastard, who played some cool stuff using the latest in laptop technology.

Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus deftly uses the laptop to hold his record sleeves as he DJs at Bubble & Squeak.

The Boog mixed in various R&B and soul tracks with non-standard British Invasion fare in order to achieve a mood that was not only unrelaxing (indeed, many attendees were dancing) but also decidedly unsophisticated! In spite of this, the powers that be at Hotel Chantelle decided that the event was a great success and it shall continue weekly, with next Sunday’s guest DJ being the great Josh Styles—a fellow who knows a thing or two about Moderniste music.

Here’s a list of all the records played by Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus:
