Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus and DJ Durian Sound swing at the Wham-O Watusi!
On May 6, the WHAM-O WATUSI took over the Bootleg Bar with it’s unique assortment of national and international sounds. On this occasion, resident DJ and host Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus was aided by DJ Durian Sound —a cat with thousands of fabulous international records.
Indeed, Durian Sound spends much of his time traveling the world where he searches for groovy records with wild rhythms in order to play them once a year at the WHAM-O WATUSI (he was also a guest DJ last May). Durian Sound did not disappoint. He played records from Thailand, Peru, Colombia, Camaroon, Hong Kong and places we can not even spell or pronounce, let alone find on a map! Every record was fabulous with a wicked beat. All night long, folks were complementing him on his fine selections.

DJ Durian Sound spins an unpronounceable record at the Wham-O Watusi!
Host Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus played a mix that was a little closer to the usual WHAM-O fare: R&B, soul, garage rock—including many hot blues numbers left over from last month’s blues-heavy WHAM—but spiced things up with a few of his own international discs; especially one from Iran that caused quite a stir (special thanks to Wendy Hawa, Jesse Kaminsky, Greg Allen’s friend Armond and Mahssa Taghinia who all helped figure out the artist and title of the track, which was written in Farsi on the record). Perhaps it will be played again at the next WHAM, scheduled to take place back at the Bootleg Bar on June 3 with guest Leah Lugosi.
